Get your skates on
We had a great day in town today. Together we looked around the 5th floor of
Te Papa at the artwork. In groups we chose a piece of artwork to discuss in
detail and then sketch. It was great to spend the time REALLY looking at the
art. We felt we developed more of an appreciation for the work.
After that Mr D led on on a scavenger hunt around the waterfront. We were
looking at the different sculptures.
After a yummy lunch and play at Frank Kitts Park it was off to ice skating. What
fun. There were some crazy crashes and many fancy moves to be seen.
Have a look at the video and photos and see what we have been up to.

Festivals & Celebrations
With all the work we put into our Wearable Art creations and performances last term we ran out of time to complete our inquiry on Festivals and Celebrations.
The beginning of the term sees us jumping right into the inquiry process where will be investigating this big idea:
Can you think of some specific sub-questions that will help us investigate this idea?

Writing - Taking to the next level
"The walked to the house at the end of the street."
I strode confidently to the crumbly, black ruins of the cottage at the end of the silent, isolated street while thunder coughed and lightning slit the sky’s throat.
By Margo, Matthew & Wilson
Fearfully, I walked slowly towards the deserted, crumbled old house at the end of the dark cobbled alleyway. The smashed up glass stuck out as if it was trying to push me away.
By Molly and Mia
I slowly strutted down the street as I saw the gloomy old abandoned house.
Fearfully listening to the doors creak, I walked down the to the end of the road and felt a slither down my spine.
By Olivia S
It was a blooming hot day, I felt the sunlight on my back. I strolled to the massive mansion at the of the rocky road.
By Ella & Dorrie
I strolled to the vintage house at the end of the gloomy, abandoned road. I felt the breeze push it’s way through my hair.
By Ruby
I slowly crept nervously towards the old broken down deserted house at the end of the spooky cold street
By Greta and Amy
I scampered into a mansion. I was anxious to get to the living room. I gleamed at the sign that said “money room 2 metres ahead. Take a left and you’re there.” I was trapped drowning in money.
By Elliott
I glanced at the spooky rotten old house. I decided to go over and check it out. I bowled over to the forgotten mansion then I woke up from my nightmare.
By Lyndon & Billy
I slugged my way to my drenched but colourful mansion.
By William and Oscar
The golden sunshine dancing on my face and the balmy breeze rustling in my hair, I joyfully strolled to the mansion at number 83 located at the end of the brick lane.

Wearable Art skill building - sewing
Wearable Art skill building - Training Day
It was lots of fun because the whole year 5/6 team worked together in the hall.
We worked in groups of four and had a limited time-frame in which to come up with an outfit to walk down the catwalk. The teachers also limited the materials we could use so we had to get creative. Our outfits also had to show examples of weaving, sewing and folding.

The Room of Champions...continued!!!
Last week Matthew and Maya represented the Lower Hutt Zone at the Regional Cross Country at Kaitoke. Both Matthew and Maya came 1st in their events – an outstanding achievement!
They are now focusing on the National event which takes place in Blenheim later in Term 3. Way to go you two!!
3D Shape Construction
This week in maths Room 13 has been learning about 3d shapes. We have been experimenting with constructing a variety of complicated 3d shapes including; rhombic pyramids, dodecahedrons and truncated octahedrons (what a mouthful!!)
After we constructed each shape we discussed the number of vertices, edges and faces each shape had.
You might like to have a go a making a 3d shape yourself! Check out this website for downloadable net templates. A great rainy day task!!!

Welcome Yas!
Yesterday Yas shared a presentation with us all about herself and life in Malaysia. She started by showing us some traditional dress that she wears in her country.
Later, she taught us how to play two traditional Malaysian games. The first one was called Batu Seremban. This was very similar to what we call knuckle bones except in Malaysia you play with pebbles.
The final game was called Lat-tali lat ta li tam plom! This game can be used in many different ways life like for deciding who has to clean up, making teams or elimination.
Thanks Yas for sharing your knowledge with us. We had heaps of fun and learned a lot!

Matariki
Matariki is coming up. The Seven Sisters (also known as the Pleiades star cluster) have reappeared in the night sky. If you happen to be up on a clear pre-dawn morning you can spot the Sisters low in the North-East sky.
Matariki falls on the day of the first New Moon after the Sisters return. This year Matariki is on Saturday the 4th of June.
Click here to watch a 3 part video on Matariki. What else can you find out to share with the class?

Shrinking the Solar System
In maths, a small group worked out how to show the distance each planet was from the Sun by scaling down each measurement. We used the scale 1 metre for every 100,000,000,000 kilometre. We made a table to show our information:Later on in the day, we went outside to mark out where each planet is in relation to the Sun. First, we made a prediction:Then we measured it out using a metre wheel. Click on the video to see how accurate we were:

Big Idea: Version:
The Earth’s system is a small part of a solar system within the vast system of the universe. The forces of the solar system directly affect life on Earth.
Today we visited the Carter Observatory. It was great fun learning about what makes up our Solar System.
