Testing Bridges

Today during Technology we were given a challenge to construct a bridge using only one piece of A4 paper...that's it! The bridge needed to support the heaviest weight possible. In groups we trialed several different designs. There was a clear winner (supporting a total of 72 cubes!)

Why was this design better than the rest?

Can you identify any feature that contributes to its success?

Check out the video for a selection of designs we trialled.

It's time to start thinking -Technology Introduction

Big Idea: How can we adapt and improve a playing environment to provide a safe yet challenging experience for all.

Today we used De Bono's hats to start thinking about the confidence course at Forest Lakes. Most of us had a go on the course last year so we already have some ideas of what it is like. We are going to refer back to these ideas throughout our technology inquiry to assist us with our designs of the 'Ultimate Confidence Course.'

Distorted Faces

To start of the year and try to brighten up the room we have painted some distorted faces.
We started of by doing some quick sketches of our partners. It was funny because they were very quick. We also had to draw faces upside down, with our wrong hand and without looking.
We then looked at some art by Picasso and discussed the portrait of the 'Weeping Woman'
From there we sketched out a distorted face that we were happy with.
One of the main objectives of the lesson was to learn how to hold a paintbrush and apply paint.
Here is a slide show of what we completed. Leave us a comment to tell us what you think.

Our Buddies

We had a great time today meeting our little buddies for the first time. Our buddy class is Room 3 and we can't wait to meet with them again in the coming weeks.

What makes a quality Recount?

This term we are study Recount Writing  in Literacy. Today we had a discussion around "What makes a quality recount?". We formed groups to brainstorm what we thought were the essential components of a recount.

We then discussed our ideas together to develop a set of criteria to follow when writing in the recount genre:

Day 1!

Welcome to the new school year!

It was a great first day today in Room 15. Sounds like everyone had a very relaxing break.

Our first task of the year was to establish some guidelines that we want to follow to ensure we have a successful learning environment for 2010. We started off by thinking about this question:

"What kind of classroom to we want to have?"

After reading our responses together, we formed groups to brainstorm some guidelines for the year:

After sharing our work we collated our ideas to construct our Class Treaty:
