To Infinity & Beyond!

Our Term 2 Inquiry is based around the Solar System.

Big Idea: Version:

The Earth’s system is a small part of a solar system within the vast system of the universe. The forces of the solar system directly affect life on Earth.

Today we visited the Carter Observatory. It was great fun learning about what makes up our Solar System.

What did you learn?

The "Carter Observatory" was very fun especially the movie "Astronaut". I learned that spacesuits have to be able to handle extreme conditions that the Chad's could not handle and unfortunately they died. The movie was very funny and was very informative.

I learnt that it would take 43 years to get to the closest star from earth. Before you can become an astronourt you have to train underwater and do special courses.

our trip to carter observatory was so much fun!! i loved going into the dome when the played the mini movie "astronaut'. I learnt that the littlest misshap that happens in space can be a deathly cause. the space movie was very funny at the end because the spaceman was doing the hula. the carter observatory was awesome!!!

The Carter Observatory trip was very fun and educational.I learnt that it will take 43 YEARS to get the nearest star! I also learnt that the planets, in order, from the shortest year to the longest year was the same order form the sun. Mercury, the closest planet to the sun, has the shortest year; Neptune, the planet the furthest from the sun, has the longest year, and so forth. The reason this has happened is that Mercury, being closest to the sun does not have to go as far because it has a smaller circle to rotate in, but Neptune takes longer because it has a larger circle in which it orbits.

I really enjoyed our trip to the Carter Observatory.During our visit I learnt that the astronauts have to go through special training courses before going into space.I also learnt that all stars rotate around a central space which has no stars.

The "Carter Observatory" was awsome I loved the movie about the Astronaut.I learnt that stars are suns far away and that the stars form shaps of people or things and animals.I really enjoyed the "Carter Observatory" I am going again with my dad on the weekend.

Yesterday, we went to the carter observatory, we learned that all modern day telescopes have all the right mechanism's and is generated by electricity;the T.C telescope was having to track the chosen planet to stay on the location. We also learned that to become an astronaut you had to cope with many deadly conditions- it's amazing all those problems

WOW..... I could keep up with you on 1 metre but a number like 100,000,000,000 made me stop and think! How do you actually say that number? Is it 'one hundred thousand million'?

I'm wondering, since there are three lots of 000's, that it might be 'one hundred trillion'.

I'm just guessing here though! If someone could enlighten me I would really appreciate it.

Thanks for sharing your information, Lesley
