Room 15 finally got to have their Explore Day this week. The weather was a bit wet and cold but we had a fantastic time learning about what makes a healthy stream and how we can be kaitiaki for the waterways.

Well Done Louis!!
Well the Year 5 and 6 Speech Competition is over for another year. What a fantastic journey we have been on. Each of us have presented a speech to the class. There was a huge variety of topics, from Household Pets to The Lion Man, Waking up in the morning to Kapa Haka! All the speeches were presented to a very high standard. Out of 26 speeches, 3 were chosen to represent us in the Year 5 Semi-Finals. Hailey, Olly and Louis did a fantastic job. Olly's speech on Why Not To Smoke and Louis's speech on The Beetles got them through to the Year 5 & 6 Speech Finals. The competition was tough but Louis came out on top and won the Year 5 section!
Well done Louis and everyone on a fantastic effort!

Michael Smither's - Poet's Bridge
Poet's Bridge by Michael Smither
For art this week Room 15 studied the print by NZ artist Michael Smither called Poet's Bridge. The print is a collage of small prints that all include an aspect of the bridge which is situated in Pukekura Park, New Plymouth. The bridge has a long history and is actually named after a horse that won a race and earned a lot of money for the man who commissioned the bridge. For more information click here
We studied this print closely and noticed how Smither blended colours together to show shadow, light and reflection. We practiced blending colours from dark to light on strips of paper before we started our work. Each of us choose a portion of the print to paint each. Here's how they turned out.

Effects of Pollution on the Waterways
Here is our Voicethread we made which shows what we learned about the effects of a variety of pollutions on our waterways. We have also included how we can be kaitiaki and prevent this pollution from entering the waterways.

TGiF -Science with Mr Hull
Last Friday some of us went to Mr Hull for enrichment. He showed us an experiment with an empty teabag and a naked flame.
Before you watch, can you make a prediction of what will happen to the teabag when he lights it?
Now you've watched the video can you explain why this happened?
NB: Please ask an adult if you want to try this at home!!
