The Breeze

Our last day of EOTC week was fantastic! Room 15 was lucky enough to be invited to The Breeze radio station. We recorded a song in the studio and were shown around the station. We also managed to get ourselves on air!

Special thanks to Kath and Natalie from The Breeze who showed us the ropes!

Pencarrow Bike Ride

We had a great day on Tuesday making our way to Pencarrow Lighthouse on our bikes. It was a piece of cake getting there but it was hard work getting back with that strong wind!

Well done everyone!

The History of Communication

For Inquiry this term Room 15 are learning about how we keep connected with people throughout the world using different modes of communication.
This week we brainstormed all of the different types of communication we knew and then ranked them in order from what we thought was the oldest to the newest.

We want to find out if we are right so we have developed some questions that we think will help us confirm our answers.

We would really like as many people to answer these questions as possible. Please leave a comment with your answers along with your name and your age (if you don't mind!)

Can you please make your responses really specific so it helps us with our inquiry.

1) What modes of communication were around when you were 10 years old?
2) How did you use this mode of communication to stay connected with people?
3) Did you use a landline phone to keep connected with your friends and family when you were 10 years old?
4) When did you get your first cell phone?
5) Have you ever made a message in a bottle?
6) What modes of communication did you use to hear about news around the country and the world?
7) Did you ever receive a telegram? When was it?
8) When you received a gift from someone, how did you reply to say thank you?

Thank you very much for helping us answer our questions. We will let you know soon if our guesses were correct.

Regards

Calendar Art

We have finished our fabulous art for our calendar fundraiser.
This term we are studying text in art. In this activity we used the internet to explore and gather a variety of font types. We also tried to find letter formations in photos and other images.
We then used these images to create a message which we create on Comic Life. We had to think carefully about the layout and design of our art.

What do you think?

Room 15 Dance

Over the past couple of weeks the children of Room 15 have been working with Mrs Hooke to create a dance. We had to include, locomotion, canon balling, mirroring and freezing. Check out the final product in the video below.

Well done everyone!

Inquiry Evaluation Term 3

For Inquiry this term we have been studying NZ history. All of us completed an individual inquiry on a subject of our choice. This entire process involved a lot of skill including developing key questions to assist with researching, skimming and scanning for relevant information, note taking and note making and finally publishing and creating a report.

As part of the assessment and conclusion of this unit, we need to prove we have become an 'expert' in our subject by presenting our inquiries to someone at home. Today we practiced presenting our information to a peer. We also assessed ourselves on how well we thought we went throughout the whole inquiry process.

Nearly Ready for Making Week!

Today we got into groups and discussed our designs for Wearable Arts. We had to explain the following to our group members:

* What our design would look like,
* How we were going to make it,
* What materials we are going to use.

Our designs are looking really great on paper. How will they look this time next week???

Who are we Inquiry

Last week the children of Room 15 started their personal inquiry on an aspect of New Zealand history. The idea is for every child in the class to become an expect in one area and then teach someone at home about what they have discovered.

We started by making a big question that we wanted to know the answer to. This is an open question that required lots of information to answer it. We then thought of sub questions that would help us answer the big question.

Last Thursday we used the www to find the answers to our questions. It was tough going because we had to do a lot of skimming and scanning to find the correct information quickly.

We still have a lot of information to find. It is really important to use other sources to find information like looking in reference books and asking an expert!

Below is the rubric we are using to to reflect on the learning process and to help us keep on track.

Material for Wearable Arts

Our planning and preparation for Wearable Arts is well underway. All of the children have decided on a design and have started to nut out what materials they will need to construct it.
I have mentioned to the class the importance of reusing 'unwanted' material rather than buying a whole lot of stuff. We have made a list of what material people need so they can potentially source it from other homes. Below is a list of what is needed so far. If you have any of these items and you don't mind giving them away they can be brought into school for making week in wk7.

* Tin foil
* Bottle lids
* Old fabric
* Hokey Pokey ice cream lids
* Old CD's
* Wire
* plastic bags (any colour will do)
* Brown Paper
* Newspaper
* Magazines

If you have anything else that you think might be useful we would really appreciate it!

Thanks for your help

What a load of Rubbish!!

Yesterday the Year 5 and 6 Team got together to take a closer look at the waste we were creating each day from our lunchboxes. We were quite shocked by what we discovered. We had a big chat about how we can reduce the waste that is ending up in our bins.

We have decided to take action! An action group has been established to educate us on how we can make our food nude. Next Thursday is going to be our first 'Nude Food Day' where all of us will try to think carefully about what we are putting in our lunchboxes so we can reduce the waste.

Keep checking out this blog for more information!
