Who knew you could have so much fun with nappies?!?

To get us thinking about how to administer a fair test for our science fair project we carried our an investigation on the absorbency of different baby nappies.

Most of us predicted that the reusable nappy would be the most absorbent because it was far more thicker than the disposable nappies.
  • Would it actually be the most absorbent?
  •  If not, would disposable nappy would absorb the most water?
  • Would it be the most expensive?
Here are some photos and video of our investigation.

Check out the polymer inside the disposable nappies! They certainly absorbed a lot of water!

Stay tuned for the results!

Matariki

Matariki is coming up. The Seven Sisters (also known as the Pleiades star cluster) have reappeared in the night sky. If you happen to be up on a clear pre-dawn morning you can spot the Sisters low in the North-East sky.

Matariki falls on the day of the first New Moon after the Sisters return. This year Matariki is on Saturday the 4th of June.

Click here to watch a 3 part video on Matariki. What else can you find out to share with the class?

Shrinking the Solar System

What a busy day we have had!!

In maths, a small group worked out how to show the distance each planet was from the Sun by scaling down each measurement. We used the scale 1 metre for every 100,000,000,000 kilometre. We made a table to show our information:Later on in the day, we went outside to mark out where each planet is in relation to the Sun. First, we made a prediction:Then we measured it out using a metre wheel. Click on the video to see how accurate we were:

To Infinity & Beyond!

Our Term 2 Inquiry is based around the Solar System.

Big Idea: Version:

The Earth’s system is a small part of a solar system within the vast system of the universe. The forces of the solar system directly affect life on Earth.

Today we visited the Carter Observatory. It was great fun learning about what makes up our Solar System.

What did you learn?

It's Science Week!

We have had a great time this week during science week. Check out these clips of some of the experiments we tried out. Some were great...some not so great.

Can you explain to someone at home what caused these things to react the way they did?

...the little rocket that could.....not

What happens when you mix coke and mentos?

Stan pays us a visit.

Today Room 15 was visited by Stan Swan, our local solar scientist. He shared with us the benefits of solar energy plus explained why we have seasons. We then got to making! We were each given an average solar garden lamp to dismantle so we could create a new use for it. We all had a heap of fun. Thanks Stan!

Conductors & Insulators

Today we investigated the difference between a conductor and an insulator. Through our discussion we came to the conclusion that conductors let electrons travel through it. Insulators stop electrons from traveling through it.

We spent the afternoon testing different material to confirm if they were conductors or insulators.

Completing the circuit

Today we explored how to make a complete electrical circuit to make a bulb glow. Later in the week we will explore how to represent an circuit on paper.

This website is a great site to practice drawing a circuit! Check it out.

Following the Shadows

Today we investigated the path of the sun across our sky. We were also exploring the relationship between the placement of the sun and the length of our shadows.

We discovered the lower the sun is in sky the longer our shadow will be. The higher the sun is in the sky and shorter our shadow will be.

At midday the sun is at its higher point and is at its most powerful. This position is called Meridian.

TGiF -Science with Mr Hull

Last Friday some of us went to Mr Hull for enrichment. He showed us an experiment with an empty teabag and a naked flame.
Before you watch, can you make a prediction of what will happen to the teabag when he lights it?

Now you've watched the video can you explain why this happened?

NB: Please ask an adult if you want to try this at home!!
